What's around you, with what is worth knowing before you go
Cusco is far more walkable than it looks, and almost everything starts from the historic centre. These are the things our guests usually do, with the practical detail that helps you plan.
The 15th-century Inca citadel, about three and a half hours by train from Cusco. It can be done in a day, though staying overnight in Aguas Calientes makes the trip far less rushed. Entry is capped daily and sells out in high season, so buy weeks ahead.
Full day · the train leaves from the station, a 5-minute walk away
Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Maras and Moray along the Urubamba valley. It sits lower than Cusco, so many people go on their first or second day while acclimatising. Ollantaytambo is also where the train to Machu Picchu departs.
Full day · about 30 km to Pisac
The Plaza de Armas, the Cathedral, La Compañía de Jesús, Qoricancha and Hatunrumiyoc street with its twelve-angled stone. All of it is walkable from the property, no transport needed. Sacsayhuamán is uphill, about twenty minutes further.
Half a day · starts 5 minutes from the door
Vinicunca is above 5,000 metres, so it is not a first-day plan: you need to be acclimatised. Departures are before dawn and you are back in the afternoon. If you leave before the dining room opens, ask for the box breakfast the night before.
Pre-dawn start · over 5,000 m
Cusco's everyday market: fruit, cheeses, breads, juices and food stalls. It is the cheapest and most honest way to eat in the centre, and it is a short walk away. Mornings are better, when everything is open.
A couple of hours · best in the morning
Chiri uchu, adobo, chicharrón, cuy and quinoa soup. The centre mixes neighbourhood picanterías with fine dining, and the price gap between them is wide. If it is your first day at altitude, eat light — your body will thank you.
